Mascot Tryouts

Yosef is our school’s Mountaineer. He represents every member of the Appalachian State community. It takes a lot of commitment to be Yosef. We have a team of three people that share the responsibilities of this job, one “lead” Yosef and two back-ups (Freshmen may not be the “lead” Yosef, but may be a back-up). In addition to Yosef attending all games that cheer attends, our mascot team conditions twice a week, attends one cheer practice a week, and has many other appearances to be present at during the school year. Each Yosef receives all of the benefits that cheer receives.

Yosef will follow the same schedule as cheer tryouts but work on separate skills.

 

Requirements to attend tryouts (cuts first day):

6.0 second 40-yard dash
30 consecutive push-ups (sternum touch a 2-inch pad on floor then lockout arms)

 

Skill Goals by the last day of tryouts to be considered for the Yosef position:

- Find “your walk” to use while Yosef
- Using gestures in place of words
- Practice improvisation situations with random props
- Learn basic music mixing techniques
- Prepare a one-minute skit to include any length of music. Judged on: entertainment value (no “dead” time, props, and crowd response), crowd participation (does crowd do what you ask of them? i.e. the wave, slow clap), and professionalism (no tasteless material and the skit is well planned out with good flow).

 

Estimated Tryout Schedule:

Friday 7-9pm @ Varsity Gym –
-Introductions and Rules for the Spirit Program at App State
-Testing for sprint and push-ups
-Cuts
(You may want to visit Boone earlier on Friday to meet with professors, etc.)

Saturday
9-12pm @ Sofield Indoor Practice Facility– Skills and brainstorm for your 1-minute skit
2-4pm @ Owens Fieldhouse– Work on your 1-minute skit
4:30-5pm @ Owens Fieldhouse– Interviews. 5 at a time (business dress)
5-7pm @ Sofield Indoor Practice Facility– Picnic dinner for individuals trying out, family and friends, and alumni cheerleaders/mascots.

Sunday
12pm-2pm @ Varsity Gym– Rehearse your individual skit
2pm-3:30pm @ Varsity Gym – Cheer tryout in small groups. Yosef Tryouts.
4pm @ Varsity Gym – Announce 2008-2009 App State Cheer Squad and Mascot team. Take picture and receive an App State Spirit Program t-shirt
